SELF
The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) helps developing nations power a brighter future for their people and the planet through innovative uses of solar photovoltaic power. SELF's projects address essential needs including household lighting, water pumping and purification, vaccine refrigeration, education, micro-enterprise, and modern communications.
In every action, SELF strives to honor the integrity of indigenous cultures, and to respect the delicate balance of local and global systems. Another key feature of SELF’s projects is that they are locally sustainable, and therefore families and people in the local community are trained on how to maintain the solar systems.
Since its founding in 1990, SELF has completed solar energy projects in more than 15 developing countries including: China, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Brazil,
Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria, Benin, and Rwanda. SELF is a small and agile organization that pours its resources into projects, rather than organizational bureaucracy. Christopher Flavin, President of the WorldWatch Institute, has remarked, "I know of few small non-profits with SELF's impact." Mikhail Gorbachev, presenting SELF with the 1998 Green Cross Millennium Award for International Environmental Leadership, praised SELF's, "dedication, leadership, and vanguard efforts in creating a value shift for the new millennium."
